I usually describe happiness in the sense of more satisfaction. Happiness not necessarily some pleasure experience, but neutral sort of experience that can bring deep sense of satisfaction”

The quote above is one of the answers Dalai Lamai shared when he was interviewed during the ‘The Quest for Happiness’ tour in Australia. In the 20th century where social media is the new way to connect or reconnect with people; where mobile phones have replaced the traditional kinship or the idea that the lack of any modern facilities is detrimental in pursuing a normal life – we all have developed a sort of concept of how to achieve happiness.

As Dalai Lamai shares, “The ultimate source of satisfaction within ourselves”. And we could not agree more! Such is the proper time to experience happiness as we celebrate the International Day of Happiness.

The Happiness Resolution

In July 2012, the General Assembly of the United Nations announced that March 20 is the International Day of Happiness. Initiated by Bhutan, a resolution was made stating the following clauses [as read from the article]: (1) that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal, (2) relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives, and (3) the need for more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples.

The proactive event was first celebrated in 2013 and has motivated institutions and individuals to prioritise happiness. And this year’s theme –  Happier Together – is all about focusing on things that unify people in a progressive and affirmative way.

Since it is time to refocus our time to things that promote humane happiness and overall well-being, here are some of the things to help have a positive disposition even when the situation is giving more reasons not to be happy.

Collect Awe-some Experiences

According to studies, experiencing something magical, surreal, otherworldly, or in short – awesome – increases the level of satisfaction and thus reducing any worries. In one of the findings, people would say that the moment something amazing it feels like time expanded. How can that be? Well, witnessing or experiencing something spectacular lets people realise that we are part of something naturally wonderful.

Things to do in Koh Samui, Thailand:

During your stay in Samujana, enjoy the afternoon just looking the picturesque view while waiting for the beautiful Koh Samui sunset. Perhaps a simple walk along the shores is the answer. As the soft afternoon light touches your skin, have a lazy stroll near the beach and wait as the sky turns to dusk and see a sky full of stars.

Working it Out

Being healthy does have a lot of benefits. When working out, feel-good chemical or endorphins are released to help fight off stress and relieve depression. Another explanation is that when the heartbeat increases the brain will release what we call Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor or BDNF. The BDNF has a repairing aspect that helps memory neurons. It also acts a reset switch. This is the reason why a few minutes of exercise will greatly give a happy boost everyone deserves.

Things to do in Koh Samui, Thailand:

The beauty of Samujana is that it allows guests to have an active lifestyle while taking a vacation. For starters, villas are equipped with private gym complete with necessary machines for a complete workout routine. If guests require a more intense exercise, then book a Muay Thai session with one of Samujana’s instructors.

Find Time to Interact

As social creatures, having an interpersonal relationship is one of the many things to keep us happy. In one of the longest studies done, it revealed that one of the possible biggest reason for happiness are friends. Spending time with friends can result in a happier disposition than say spending time with relatives, according to another study. Social connection lets us experience life in a more colourful way and engages us to be more open to adventure.

Things to do in Koh Samui, Thailand:

Take a tour of the many tourist spots with your friends. One can start with riding an ATV on the off-beaten road going to the forest. If island hopping and snorkelling is what you and your friends need, then renting Samujana’s Baidee is definitely worth it!

In the end, we are responsible for our emotions and perspective. Being happy is not just a one-day affair – it can be our way of life!
